Hello!

So, I guess this post is just here to let you know who I am and what I'm here to do. Let me start with that.

My name is Madeline and I am a student of music planning to attend Carnegie Mellon University to study Classical Voice. Yeah - music is my love, my passion. And before I head off to college I am on a little excursion to discover more about music, where it comes from, how it's made and more!

I know that music is an extremely broad topic, but it is something that every culture, race, religion, gender - and just plain EVERYONE - can relate to and enjoy. Is there anything else that is quite so uniting as that? Well... now that I mention it - maybe food!

Just a reminder, I love music. So, I decided to start this blog for my own personal purposes in order to document different things that I have learned about: theory, music history, new releases, operas, musical theatre shows, composers, and cute stuff related to music.

People always say to follow your heart and if my heart is saying to perform and learn and grow - well, that's just what I am going to try my best to do. We're all in a journey of some kind, but if you're like me and you have this dying passion for music, then just tune in for a bit here and there. I know that it'll be worth your while.

I remember when taking my IB Music class (HL) in High School, that I had a very hard time finding different lessons and things online that taught music theory in a way that I could understand, so I plan to do a series of videos on music theory, all composed of short videos that address a certain subject. That way, if you have any questions you can easily search the titles of the videos to see what you need to review! I also plan to transcribe the videos for each lesson so that hopefully you will just be able to search for keywords in the blog and find exactly what you need.

I also plan to create vocabulary lists for different levels of theory terms, little exercises and more. It's a lot of work, and this is a one-woman show, so you'll just have to bear with me as I work out all of the kinks!

Anyways, I love what I do and all I want is to be able to share my passion for enchanting music with everyone else who feels the same way I do.

And if you're a singer - I cannot stress to you how important knowing theory really is!

But, not only theory, I want to do a series called "the progression of music" and start from the beginnings of music with Gregorian ecclesiastic chant ultimately turning into the music we have today.

I am also REALLY wanting to do a series on composers. Hitting major composers in history and maybe also some ones that we really haven't heard a lot in studies, but had huge impacts on music and gorgeous scores.

.... I'm sure you think I have to be done at this point right? Well, I'll spare you anymore, because ultimately I just want you to know that I have some amazing ideas and I cannot wait to get started!

Until our next discovery!

Theory Lesson 1 - The Staff

This is lesson one in our series on music theory, and this lesson is going to be all about the musical staff. The sounds or music or what you hear are represented as notes on the musical staff now the staff is made up of 5 lines that are counted from the bottom up, and there are four spaces and they are counted the same way: from the bottom up.

Now how high a note sounds, the higher it is placed on the bars and lines and the same goes for the lower notes being on the lower bars and lines.

Remember to keep practicing!

Don't forget to do the exercises in the video! I know the editing is kinda crappy, but I'll get better, I promise!(:

Next time we will be talking about the treble clef, then the bass clef and then we are going to put together the Grand Staff. Don't tune out now! I'll see you next time!
